1,000 flash drives
for 1,000 children

In 2010 Orphan Impact will distribute 1,000 USB flash drives to 1,000 orphan children living among 12 orphanages. The concept is simple, but the impact significant. There are 13,000 institutionalized orphans in Vietnam living in 153 orphanages. This averages out to about 85 children per orphanage.

From our experiences in 2009 we know it costs us $1,700 per orphanage. This includes furnishing the computer lab, supplying the Wi-Fi, teaching the children, training the teachers, and all ongoing support and project monitoring. $1,700 per orphanage / 85 children = $20 per child.

Simple concept, significant impact. When a supporter helps buy a USB flash for $20 that individual is helping to provide one additional orphan children with the chance to be connected to a world of opportunity.

The drives are pre-loaded with portable applications and set-up for personal storage of documents, photos, and videos
 
Children receive their own personalized USB flash drive, creating a sense of pride in ownership.
 
As time goes by the portfolio of work saved to the flash drive grows building satisfaction of personal achievement.
 
And children move from computer to computer, un-phased by the concern of leaving their work behind.
 
Armed with personal USB flash drives, pride of ownership, and satisfaction of achievement, the children grow in confidence as education becomes an exciting exercise in learning more about the world around them.
 
Suddenly, a world that previously felt out of reach seems much more near and institutionalized children feel much less isolated.
 
New found confidence begins to instill motivation: motivation to graduate from high school and motivation to prepare for futures beyond the orphanage.
 
Before long universities are swarming with the same children who previously would not have even considered applying for college.
